10 North Austin venues for family events

The ten at a glance

Every figure below comes from the venue's own page. Where a venue does not publish a capacity or a floor area, the table says so rather than guessing.

Ask what the rate excludes: six of these take a refundable deposit, and the Northwest center adds $82.50 an hour for staff.

Three quick picks. A birthday for thirty: the Commune or Kitchen House. An anniversary for a hundred: the Baca Center. A graduation past a hundred: Clay Madsen or Celebrations.

How to read the rooms

Capacity usually means seated capacity, so ask for both. Ask about the minimum, the deposit and the cleaning fee before you hold a date.

  • A kitchen, not a kitchenetteA sink and a counter save the afternoon.
  • Windows on one sideLight from two directions beats light from above.
  • Parking you can seeGrandparents leave last. Nobody should walk far in the dark.
A room that seats 120 in rows feels empty at a party where everyone stands in a circle.

What I would check before booking

  1. Ask what time you get the room, not when the party starts. Setup sits inside your hours.
  2. Ask whether chairs and tables are included, and who sets them out.
  3. Walk the room at the hour you will use it, not at noon.
  4. Find the blank wall. The cake, the gifts and the group shot go there.
  5. Get the alcohol rule in writing. A deputy or permit fee arrives late.

A plain wall and daylight from one side will photograph better than any decoration.

Guests photograph a flower-covered stage where a lit numeral glows beneath wire chandeliers
A decorated stage, and the guests who built the frame themselves

See the recent work, the investment page, or the photoblog. Choosing a park instead of a room? The North Austin photo locations guide covers ten.

Send the date, the room and the headcount, and I will tell you what the light does there.
